  1. I have seen ALOT of videos on how to self-publish your first book. However, yours is the ONLY one that is thorough and complete. Thank you!

  2. Thank you soo much for this!
I’m 12, which is weird, but I’m currently writing a book. And in the future I plan to publish!

    1. Don’t give up on your dreams! S.E. Hinton wrote “The Outsiders” as a 15 year old high school student. (A student who failed creative writing class!) She has sold over 15 million copies, had a movie made, and there is now an Outsiders museum in the works!

  3. I really like her explanations. Her dictation is exact and to the point. This exact process will be what I follow for both of my books.

  4. She is so genuine! As a self publisher, it takes a few people to help you along the way but it doesn’t have to be an expensive journey.

    1. Yep, Becoming a self publisher is actually not difficult and not as expensive as you think, and we are willing to answer all the questions for self publishers. About printing, shipping, etc.

    2. Hello there. It’s 3 years later when am seeing this and am curious. Do you have any books you’ve published?

  5. Thanks for all your tips!! I just published my own fantasy novel on Amazon and this video is really inspiring me to keep on writing! You go girl!

    1. I have a couple questions! Was it a paper back? R you making any sales and what is it name gotta go support u lol.

    2. I wrote construction book and it s ready to publish,
Actually wanted to publish it through amazon from Canada , could you give me how we can go through.
Looks from Canada we have not access to amazon publishing!
      Is it true?

  6. My daughter myself and mom hopefully wants to write our first book before the year ends. Another thing thanks for this step we can now start our self publishing one by one great content @Gillian Perkins👍🏾🙏

  7. Thank you so much, Gillian! Your clear explanations and visuals encouraged me to pick up where I left off in my book writing. Simply searching for the basics of book writing can be so burdensome let alone finding a credible source. This video lessened that burden exponentially! ❤️

  8. this is so amazing!! i‘m currently working on my first short story collection that i plan to publish and your tips and guidelines are so super helpful for someone who has no idea about the publishing process!!

  9. I love your channel and how much you share about your experience. As a publishing professional, I do enjoy your book-related videos as well. With that said, standard publishing requires a minimum of 2 edits (copyediting and proofreading). There are usually different levels of editing so 2 edits are more than reasonable.

  10. I’m learning to make my own book for the first time. It’s sad that the book is made so much less at an actual store. I really appreciate your video. Very well spoken and right to the point. I hope that by next year I could make my own book. Thanks for the video.

  11. It’s an amazing time for writers. With self-publishing, the sky is really the limit. You can put your work out there like never before. Take advantage of that.

    1. Sir please that’s not the same with me ooo. I have written my book for almost 1 year now but am still struggling to publish on Amazon…am from Africa, please can u help me

    2. @Dr. Joseph Nhyira Obessey Of course it is not same with everyone. This guy makes it sound all you have to do is click publish and boom, your hard work and effort FROM WRITING is rewarded. Heck you need as aggressive guerrilla marketing as Coca Cola nowadays or an established base to make it through.

    3. See my post above. I’m actually glad it wasn’t published by a big publisher (I’m the type who would call Random House to say I really need to rewrite chapter 17, and would you change that comma to a semi-colon?) Getting distribution without an agent or publisher seems impossible, though. I guess I went about this back-assward. Any suggestions?

  12. I’ve watched several “do it yourself” guides to publishing and this is by far the most comprehensive and easily explained of the lot. Thanks, Gillian!

  13. This is the most informative video I have found so far on how to self-publish a book. Everything you’ve covered was exactly what I was hoping to learn. In fact, I learned more in this 26 minute video than I have during a full week’s worth of online research. Well done! (new subscriber).

  14. This is so thorough! Thank you for generously sharing this. I can’t wait to get to the cover design stage. Seeing a character I created with my mind on the cover will feel so surreal and wonderful

  15. I’m a freelance editor, and I prefer to receive the whole book upfront. Take fiction, for example: Later text can have me rethinking earlier edits, as I gain a better understanding of some story element. That said, I understand what you’re saying fully! That’s why I offer a free sample beforehand; I want to know we’re a fit as much as the author does.

Now, however, I’m on to self-publishing, which is why I’m here. Haha. 🙂

  16. This is so helpful! I’ve been dreaming about writing a fantasy book since I was six years old, and I started writing seriously at the end of 2020, and I’m already at 90,000 words! This is a huuuge help for publishing, thank you so much! 🙂

    1. That’s amazing! I’ve been writing since I was 12 and I still love it. Now I’m hoping to make a career out of it and I’m looking to self publish a middle grade novel.
I’m not big on social media but I want to begin because I know I need to promote my book

    2. @Katniss Grace That’s wonderful! I want to do something similar, and eventually start an authortube channel! I’m almost finished with my novel, I’m on the last round of edits 🥰

    3. Be attentive to the norm of the genre you writing in. The length of a work can determine what marketing category it falls into.

    4. Congratulations! Just a tiny piece of advice. I’m not sure the age your book is geared towards, in general unless it’s for young kids a good marketable length for the fantasy genre is around 30,000 – 50,000 words. Of course, there are two ways to get to that length. One would be to edit down the existing book. Another option is to divide the book into multiple books and choose to write a series rather than one single book. Good luck!

    5. Nice, great work, a few days ago I started writing my own book and I’m at 7360 words. I plan to do around 100k-180k

  17. I really appreciate the time and effort you took to make this video for all of us aspiring writers to self-publish for free. Thank you!

  18. Hi Gillian,
I am currently completing a trilogy in the dystopian genre set partly in my city.
The story is aimed purely at teenagers and young adults.

For the promotion of the novel, do you think it might be a good idea to have it publicised by the university’s local radio station, which is very popular with students?

  19. This was actually a very helpful video and very informative. Publishing a book isn’t like I imagined it would be. I thought it would be a lot more complex, but this actually seems relatively simple. I want to write my first book. I think I won’t worry about all the info in this video yet. For now I’ll just focus on writing up my thoughts slowly, cleaning up spelling and grammar as I go along, then I can come back to this video and go through all the steps starting from getting it proof read. No point in overwhelming my mind worrying about all these steps until I’ve actually written the first draft of the book. I can kind of see that this process would become second nature to a person who’s done this several times
