My Minimalist Apartment

While moving into my new apartment I came to the realization that I have too much STUFF. There is really no other way to put it…
In just the few short years that I’ve lived on my own, I had acquired enough stuff to fill multiple U-Haul trucks. How was this possible? Why do Americans have so many belongings and are they necessary to feel fulfilled in life?

When I moved into my new apartment in August I wanted to try something new. I made the decision to adopt a way of living known as minimalism. Contrary to what you may have heard, the goal of minimalism is NOT to deprive yourself of materialistic goods, but rather to focus on the items that add value to your life.

In today's society, we find ourselves with duplicate items. How many of us have a cell phone graveyard drawer in our home? What about that old microwave in your basement? Why do we have three coffee pots?

In this video, I will share my story of becoming a minimalist.

    1. Nate O’Brien yeah! Make more videos like this. Really enjoyed it and thanks for the value you’re always sharing.

  1. One of the benefits of living with less “stuff” is that we spend less time cleaning! Now that’s what I call living comfortable 🙂

    1. That is THE reason for me, along with how it affects the mind too: I feel like my mind feels cleaner and less cluttered when the room is so as well.

    1. Andrei Jikh huge fan of yours. Keep up the good work. Your channel is so underrated, one of the best out there.

    1. Yes! I own 5 plates, 5 cups, etc cause I have a family of 5. It has made my life so much easier. I love it!

    2. @One Ofakind style Buy an extra plate and cup in case anyone drops by. Also you’ll need an extra set on standby incase the ones in use gets damaged.

    3. Or is that just being lazy? If you choose to own nothing only because you won’t have to clean it, isn’t living minimally, it just being lazy.

    1. Maybe! There are many old souls on this planet, especially at this time.
But we should also think of the normal way of getting information in this world, to learn, to know. The intuitive access we have😊 Leading humanity to a higher consciousness.🌎
      Greetings from Germany!

  2. I loved this video. I wish I’d have started this lifestyle 20 years ago. Most people don’t understand that minimalism isn’t about living with nothing. Its about living without clutter and random stuff. I see paying 1k for a mattress because you will have it a long time, get a lot of use and makes you comfortable. It isn’t about being cheap so much as spending mindfully. Kudos to you!

  3. I’m so glad I found this video!
I am 55 years old and live alone in a two-bedroom house plus a full basement! Just surrounded by stuff! Lots and lots of antiques and hand me downs. I am getting rid of almost everything! I said to myself, if it don’t fit in this closet, then I’m getting rid of it!
All the dust and the constant cleaning, it’s like Non-Stop! It never ends and I’m sick of it! All this week I’ve been selling lots of stuff on Craigslist, putting stuff by the curb. I don’t want to end up on an episode of Hoarders!😩😆

    1. @Riled Mouse thank you for your kind support. I have been going crazy mad over here just getting rid of everything that is not nailed down! I put my old couch on the curb side. I got rid of about five or six chairs and footstools. I put all of that by the curbside. Some people took all the chairs, but the trashman/garbage man took away the sofa that was beyond repair. I have been donating stop left and right! Everything from, pictures, and tables and tablecloth, curtains and drapes, dishes, knickknacks and bric-a-bracs! Everything has been donated to a thrift store here in town that helps animals with their medical care, like shots spay and neuter programs. I’m sorry I haven’t replied earlier, it’s just I’ve been on a rampage up in here! LOL

    2. @My Secret Sketchbook thank you so much! I am on the roll over here! My flat is almost completely empty! I love it!😄

    3. S P it sure is liberating! It feels like a monkey has been lifted off my back. It’s like I could breathe again! Getting rid of all the junk! Thank you for your kind support.🌞

    1. Exactly, I sent these videos to my 19 y. Old son. He’s working 2 jobs. I adore that, but I wish for his sake and his future to get aome college coarses going. He grew up without his father,
But he needs great advice such as this young man.
      Sh

  4. DEAR NATE: I am single father of a 12yr old boy in Mexico, and we are going through a lot of hardship now, but your confidence and personality fills me with inspiration and hope.

    1. Wishing the both of you a beautiful life. It’s not easy raising a kid by yourself, you have lots of courage and I wish you nothing but the best.

    2. Wow you are looking after a 12yr old boy- VERY WELL DONE. Says allot about you. Sending Prayers, Hope, friendship Love and Light PEACE from England UK

    3. wow you’re doing an amazing job sir! It’s going to be difficult for only few years or just months you never know! sending prayers and love from India 🙂

  5. I saw this video about 5 months ago and back then I thought “what a strange guy, I love having stuff”. Somehow you intrigued me to research minimalism more and I ended up welcoming it to my life as well. Thanks for inspiring me to embrace the minimalistic living <3

  6. Minimalism is not about ‘having less stuff.’ It’s about ‘having only stuff which we love and use often.’

    1. There’s at 80/20 rule that studies have found apply universally in which it states that people tend to use 20% of the things they own 80%….so following your statement, in theory this would mean having less stuff

  7. Minimalism isn’t about buying cheap stuff, it’s the opposite. You have very few items but the ones you have are quality and will last you. I am a minimalist. I may have less clothes than I used to but I buy nice things so I don’t need to replace them as often. You’re killing it for 21.

    1. Although I am not a traditional minimalist I kind of explain how I utilize minimalist philosophies in my own life. Taking what works within my situation.🌿

  8. The most Interesting fact about money is, when you are financially secure enough to get everything you want, you then want nothing at all.

    1. Naa ..minimalist just values QUALITY vs QUANTITY . it still requires money to afford simple but comfy lifestyle. You don’t need cheap useless appliances.

  9. Very commendable of you Nate. You are what every mother wish their child to be. Most young adults don’t think this way, who do not take responsibility and just want never ending fun in their young life. Most usually set a goal only after life forces them a hard way, and only become wiser after it. That’s why I really applaud you because you seek wisdom, practice and share them. You are already going places. 👏👏👏👏

  10. The more things I have, the more weighed down I feel. I have been living a minimalistic lifestyle for the last 12 years and its really made me happy.

  11. Interesting content, declutter = clear mind This kid has understood many many essentials; amazing maturity, poise, and talent.
