If you over invest in a 401k and need the money before 59 1/2 you are penalized. With a taxable brokerage account you can take out money anytime and only pay the federal and state income taxes. Long term capital gains owning longer than 12 months you pay a lower federal rate. Also with a taxable brokerage account not with IRAs and 401ks you can take advantage of tax loss harvesting; offsetting capital gains with losses and deduct $3000 a year in losses if no gains
